WAYS OF SEEING

Ways of Seeing is the name of dramaturgy duo Liesje Knobel and Marijn Lems. We offer what we call focus dramaturgy: a helping hand at a moment of your choice in your creative process. We join your process for one or two days and give feedback on your directorial vision, script, run-through and/or design, and offer you tools to make your performance, film, TV series or game even better. In doing so, we each help you from our own expertise. Liesje has a background as a theatre maker and scenographer and Marijn as a talent developer and reviewer. Therefore, we look at things from different perspectives: Liesje more from a visual perspective, and Marijn more with a focus on text. Besides our standard way of working, we offer several other services that can help you in your artistic process. It would be a pleasure and a privilege for us to help you achieve your artistic goals!

WAYS OF BEING

Marijn Lems

theatre critic / videogame critic / dramaturge

Marijn Lems (1979) worked as theatre programme director at Theater De NWE Vorst in Tilburg, arts centre STUK in Leuven and Flemish culture house De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam. He then worked as residency coordinator at theatre workspace Het Huis Utrecht. At all the places where he worked, Marijn was also responsible for talent development and dramaturgy.

In 2016, he started working as a theatre critic for Theaterkrant and NRC. He now also works as a video game critic for Belgian newspaper De Standaard. Marijn has a strong analytical viewpoint and always places art in a contemporary socio-political context.

Liesje Knobel

scenographer / theatre director / dramaturge

Liesje Knobel (1984) has worked as a theatre maker, scenographer and dramaturge. She received a bachelor degree from the department of Theatre Science at the University of Amsterdam in 2009, after which she continued her education at the Scenografy bachelor at the Theatre Academy of Amsterdam, where she graduated in 2013.

Together with designer Sanne Lips, she formed the duo LIPS&KNOBEL until 2024, creating visual theatre essays with a feminist slant. As a scenographer and dramaturge, Liesje worked with Liesbeth Coltof, Sanne Nouws, Zarah Bracht and Lennart Monaster, among others. Liesje has a contrary, incisive eye. In her versatile practice, she creates worlds in which the status quo is questioned.

WAYS OF WORKING

With Ways of Seeing, we offer different working methods:

Focus Dramaturgy

In every artistic process, an extra pair of eyes is useful at some point. That is what we offer with focus dramaturgy: a short-term exchange about your project, which can be inserted at any moment in a creation process.

Standby Dramaturgy

If you feel the need to occasionally ask a question or spar with us we offer standby dramaturgy: we are available by phone, via Zoom or by e-mail to give advice about questions that have come up in the artistic process.

Mock reviews

In the video game industry, it is standard practice for large companies to let freelance writers produce mock reviews: a review of the work that serves to give you an idea of how the press will react to it, and that reveals salient qualities or weaknesses of the work.

Specialised Dramaturgy

From time to time, it can be useful to look at an element of your work separately: the script, the stage design, the sound design or the direction. One of the two dramaturgists, depending on who is most specialised in the area of the chosen element, will do a comprehensive analysis with you.

WAYS OF VALUING

We apply different rates depending on the level of structural support your company or organisation receives. For commercial enterprises and projects, the highest rate applies. This allows us to keep our services affordable for everyone.
